It has been shown that signals from LPS promote fibroblast proliferation and the synthetic capacities of hyaluronic acid and elastin of fibroblast.

The dermis is made up of fibroblasts, which produce collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid, giving elasticity to the skin. However with aging, the dermis will become thinner and the elasticity of the skin goes down. It is not possible to deliver collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid to the dermis using cosmetics applied to the epidermis. Therefore, to improve skin elasticity, it is necessary to grow fibroblasts in the dermis and enhance capabilities of fibroblasts to produce these substances within dermis.

As mentioned above, LPS does not penetrate directly into the dermis. However, the epidermal cells stimulated by LPS transmit immunostimulatory signals to the dermis. Adding a culture solution of macrophages stimulated by LPS to fibroblasts promotes their proliferation and enhances their hyaluronic acid and elastin synthetic capacities.
